FAQ's

When should I start solids?

It's recommended to introduce solid foods around 6 months of age, while continuing to breastfeed or formula-feed. This timing supports your baby's nutritional needs and developmental readiness.

What are the signs my baby is ready?

Look for these indicators that your baby is prepared to begin solids:

  • Good head and neck control: Your baby can sit upright with minimal support.
  • Interest in food: They may watch you eat, reach for your food, or mimic chewing motions.
  • Loss of tongue-thrust reflex: They are starting to no longer push food out of their mouth with their tongue.
  • Ability to pick up food: Showing motor skills to grasp and bring food to their mouth.

How do I prevent choking?

To minimise the risk of choking:

1. Choose the Right Food Textures and Sizes
- Purees: Start with soft, smooth textures and gradually move to purees with lumps, then to mashed foods.
- BLW: If you’re starting solids with a baby-led weaning approach, larger, adult finger-sized pieces are actually safer. You can also offer soft foods that are easy to mash between your thumb and forefinger.
2. Keep a Close Eye During Meals: Always stay nearby while your little one is eating.
3. Learn Basic First Aid: Familiarise yourself with choking first aid procedures, like infant CPR.
4. Avoid High-Risk Choking Foods: Don’t give your baby nuts, whole grapes, popcorn, or any hard, sticky, or slippery foods.
5. Maintain an Upright Feeding Position: Make sure your baby is sitting upright in a highchair with good back support during meals.

Can I use NDIS funding?

Yes, you can utilise your NDIS funding if feeding therapy or mealtime support is included in your child’s NDIS plan. The funding can cover the purchase of Joyfull feeding products or therapeutic tools and resources to support your child’s feeding goals.

We support NDIS participants whether you’re self-managed or plan-managed.
